Salma and Hazem Chehabi have been instrumental in helping grow many campus areas through their commitment of time, service and financial support since first becoming involved at UCI in the mid-1990s. A board-certified physician in nuclear medicine, Hazem Chehabi started working with UCI doctors early on, offering his facilities at Newport Diagnostics for training and serving as a volunteer faculty member in the Department of Radiological Sciences. His wife, Salma, is a philanthropist and community leader who earned a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences at UCI in 1999 and a bachelor’s degree in psychology and social behavior at the university last year. Today they are UC Irvine Foundation trustees, and Hazem Chehabi chairs the organization’s strategic planning committee. Their steadfast support of “A Celebration of Stars” includes the largest-ever gift to the event, which they co-chaired in 2008. At UCI, they are lifetime members of the Chancellor’s Club and Health Science Partners.

Like the Olympian gods of yore, you can revitalize yourself as you please, and boast your pleasure with showings of material wealth. These acts are only a shallow and false warship of god through oneself. We must reshape ourselves through knowledge and wisdom, not through smoke and mirrors, not through lies and pleasantries. Recognize ourselves as animals that lack a divine sanctioned rite on some higher level than the “rest” of the natural world. This anthropocentrism, the idea that we are special and that he have some higher right over all species, keeps us from acknowledging the spark we call “consciousness” as our only attribute of possible divine attribution. See the future of humans as the realization that we must cherish and nurture that spark into a fire that illuminates and enlightens, against the demon-haunted world. Only through this, one day, we may become gods ourselves, undying and allknowing, but not because of making a let’s-pretend game, or a non-tangible mystery place for a mystery body-inhabiting entity to go after death, but because we forged our destiny, unrelenting, and never stopping to waste time on tinsel.
