Their self-titled debut album was released in April 2009 by Prosthetic Records. www.myspace.com Animals as Leaders was formed “out of the ashes” of guitarist Tosin Abasi’s previous band, Reflux. The heavy metal record label Prosthetic Records saw Abasi’s guitar work and asked him to create a solo album for them. Abasi initially declined, feeling such an endeavor would be “egotistical and unnecessary”. When Reflux disbanded, Abasi decided to take the label’s offer. The name Animals as Leaders was inspired by Daniel Quinn’s 1992 novel Ishmael, which addresses anthropocentrism. Abasi coined the name as a reminder “that we’re all essentially animals”. prostheticrecords.com The project’s first album, Animals as Leaders, was recorded in early 2008. Abasi recorded all guitar and bass tracks on the album; drums and various synthesized effects were programmed by engineer Misha Mansoor. The album was released April 28, 2009 by Prosthetic Records.

Leopold is our pet wild turkey. His “purpose” in life is to care for the ducks, as you can see. He is named after conservationist Aldo Leopold, author of A Sand County Almanac. Leopold is about 1 1/2 years old, and sleeps in the “quack house” with the ducks, chickens, and guineas.

Building New Social Relations: Prefigurative Politics in Movements Chair: Andrew Cornell, American Studies, New York Univeristy Chris Dixon, History of Consciousness, University of California, Santa Cruz Cindy Milstein, Institute for Anarchist Studies Deborah Gould, Sociology, University of Pittsburth Harjit Sing Gill, Institute for Anarchist Studies The term prefigurative politics is widespread within various activist movements, and it describes modes of organization and tactics undertaken that accurately reflect the future society being sought by the group. The IWW and other anarchist activists refer to this as “building a new world in the shell of the old.” If a group is aiming to eliminate class distinctions, prefigurative politics demands that there be no class distinctions within that group. The same principle applies to hierarchy: if a group is fighting to abolish some or all forms of hierarchy in larger society, prefigurative politics demands they do the same within their group structure. Cindy Milstein is an anarchist activist and educator who talks at various anarchist and socialist gatherings. One such talk was the very informal but in-depth class, “Anarchism 101″ at the National Conference on Organized Resistance, at the American University in Washington DC, in 2003 and 2004.
